Child Psychology
Unfortunately just like adults, children can also experience challenges to their mental health and well-being. The good news is that also just like adults, children can greatly benefit from talking to a caring mental health professional.
Working with children and adolescents does require unique skills compared to working with adults. Voxus has a range of clinicians who have experience working with children and supporting their mental health. Through utilising a variety of different engaging strategies they help make speaking to a “stranger” about mental health engaging and beneficial for children and adolescents of all ages.
Having a child experiencing mental health challenges can be distressing for parents also. Voxus offers support to parents to help them manage their mental health through these times, and learn skills to support their children through these experiences.
Voxus Session Structures
The first session will involve a parent interview. This is where only yourself and your other half will come into the Voxus office and have a session with the clinician. You don’t need to bring your child along to this session. The second session involves a child screener. This is a full session with just your child. This provides an opportunity for the clinician to meet your child and build a connection with them. From the third session onwards, sessions may alternate between yourself and your child depending on the scenario, however, your child will need to be present for every session.
Child Assessment and Testing
How can Assessments Help?
Psychological assessments allow diagnostic clarity, which we can guide our formulation of evidence-based treatment approaches. Some assessments can help us track how the treatment is progressing and whether an adjustment to our treatment is required for your child.
Types of Tests
Clinical/Diagnostic Assessment
These assessments identify a range of childhood psychological disorders through testing conducted by psychologists. We have a range of tools which can help us achieve diagnostic clarity in order to properly help your child.
Cognitive/Learning Assessment
These assessments identify the child’s neurocognitive functioning and learning issues (e.g. Intellectual disability, dyslexia) through testing conducted by psychologists. We have a range of tools which can help us achieve diagnostic clarity in order to properly help your child.
ADHD Assessment
These assessments assist in diagnosing and managing ADHD and other attentional difficulties. We can also work with the paediatrician in ascertaining the appropriate dosage of stimulant medications.
Behavioural Assessment
These assessments help parents who care for children diagnosed with developmental disorders by pinpointing existing strengths and weaknesses in adaptive functioning.
These disorders are associated with behaviour or misconduct that is inappropriate for that age range. These include Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder. ODD children commonly display hostile behaviour, typically behave negatively towards authority figures and lose their temper easily. Children with CD typically engage in rule breaking behaviour, deceit and show a lack of respect towards others.
Emotional Disorders and Trauma
Children suffering from emotional disorders or trauma tend to be worried, agitated, depressed and are chronically fatigued.
Let Voxus Psychology support your child and help you better understand them through diagnostic and clinical testing to ensure the most appropriate and effective strategies are implemented.
